Nelson Lodge
Nelson Lodge is a six bedded short stay respite care centre in Long Stratton, South Norfolk. Nelson Lodge caters for school age children with autistic spectrum disorders or other learning disabilities including associated physical disabilities and challenging behaviours.
The centre offers enjoyable breaks for children and much needed respite to families who, without this service, might struggle to maintain caring for their children at home.
Whilst the school holidays tend to be the busiest times, the centre is full during term times too with children travelling to and from school and staying at weekends.
Opened in 2004, this purpose built centre is well equipped with a wonderful ‘sensory room', ball pool and now a superb garden and play area funded by BBC Children in Need. In just six short weeks, the dull and uninteresting gardens were converted into breathtaking areas of amusement for our guests, facilitating creative play, learning and developmental opportunities. This was made possible through the support of;
• a major grant donation of £55,212 from the BBC Children in Need Appeal
• a donation of £5,286 from supporters of the Norfolk Autistic Society, and
• a final contribution of £3,772 in project funding from the East of England Cooperative Society to see the project through to completion.
The centre is very lively and staff need a lot of energy to cope with six demanding and often challenging children.
Nelson Lodge was set up in partnership with the Norfolk Autistic Society, Orwell Housing, Norfolk County Council Social Services and South Norfolk District Council. Break is responsible for the management of the on-site project, with revenue funding for Nelson Lodge being met by Norfolk Children's Services.
