Mentoring & Transition Work
Mentoring
Our Mentoring Project links young people who have experience of the care system with adults who can act as positive role models and provide support for them as they face various issues in their path towards adulthood. The project supports 25 young people at any given time, most of these over a period of more than one year.
Mentoring is a one to one non-judgemental relationship in which an individual volunteer gives their time to support and encourage another. The value to the young person is spending time with a person who relates to young people, is able to listen, accepts them as they are and inspires, encourages and motivates them. The value to the mentor is the help they can give through their experience.
The scheme is always looking for more volunteers. The voluntary time spent with the young people is a minimum of two hours every fortnight and we give training and pay expenses and mileage. The training includes an introduction to Break, Boundaries, Attachments, Relationships and Child Protection.
At present the project supports young people in West Norfolk but there are plans to expand the project to other areas.

Transitional
In January 2009, Break appointed a Transition worker to work specifically with the young adults who have left or are in the process of moving on from our children’s homes into independent accommodation. This has provided a known point of ongoing access into Break with advice, support and practical assistance. A second support worker has recently been recruited.
